Simple Remote Computer Access

iTwin Remote Access Device

iTwin was originally demonstrated in the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show and made a reappearance last week at this year’s CES.  This device is being touted as providing Easy Remote File Access.  If you have ever desired the ability to access your work computer files from home or similar, but lack the aptitude to install and configure the many versions of remote access software that are available or are simply looking for something easy, iTwin may be what you’re looking for.

iTwin looks like a USB flash drive, but is actually a pair small USB-plug modules.  To connect your computers together, you put each plug into the computers that you are attempting to connect.  THAT’S IT!  Both computers are encryptically connected over the Internet, and set up to share content.  According the iTwin manufacturer, each half of the device is identical, and the remote access is only possible when the two coded plugs are used together.

For security, there’s no mixing of the modules. If one of the two modules is missing, you must purchase a new matching set.  Currently, iTwin is only available for Windows-based machines, with Mac support soon to follow.  The iTwin Remote Access device is currently available, priced at $99.  See the iTwin website for more details. – www.itwin.com

The OWLE: Turn your iPhone into a Hand-held Video Rig

One of the big draws to the new iPhone 4 is its ability to shoot HD video. While the enhanced video resolution does improve picture quality vastly, there are still some inherent drawbacks to shooting video on such a small device – namely shaky pictures caused by movement, muffled sound due to microphone placement on the phone and limited camera angles due to the fixed lens on the phone that can’t be changed. Or can it? Well at least on device looks to solve these issues with an attachment called the OWLE Bubo. OWLE stands for “Optical Widget for Life Enhancement” (the company’s name) and bubo is the genus for American horned owls and old world eagle owls.

The OWLE Bubo is a camera mount that brings the best features of a camcorder to the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4: stability, optics, microphones and tripods. The OWLE Bubo is made of a solid piece of aluminum, making it virtually indestructible. The OWLE Bubo comes standard with 37mm lens threading, as well as a 0.45x wide angle/ macro lens combination. OWLE includes a 3.5mm 4-pin omni-style mic with a windscreen that can be swiveled to pick up either the camera operator’s voice or the sound the subject is making. The aluminum case also provides four standard threaded receptacles for mounting on a tripod or attaching other threaded accessories, and there’s also a cold shoe mount for adding extras like lights or other mics.  The construction of the bubo is rock solid. The design of the case makes it very easy to grip it in both hands, helping to create a stable handheld platform for your iPhone photography. The screw-in design for the lens will make it possible for OWLE to sell other lenses for the bubo case. While the company isn’t divulging future plans, a spokesperson said that telephoto or zoom lenses were in consideration as accessories.
